1) Light Fittings and switches:
It is common these days to want to replace old ceiling roses and lamp shades for more modern style flush-mount light fittings. Most new houses now have metal or metal-effect sockets and switches as opposed to white plastic fittings.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS of D.I.Y:
All metal electrical fittings, sockets and switches must be earthed correctly to avoid electrical shock. Additionally problems can occur when old houses have been partially rewired. Sometimes the power sockets may have been upgraded but the lighting circuit wiring is still the old style. Not all old wiring is labelled clearly or correctly and you need to have the correct test equipment to know which wire is going where before connecting a new fixture or light switch safely.

2) Adding or repositioning power sockets:

Most older properties do not have sufficient power sockets to cope with the requirements of modern day living. As part of our electrical services, one easy solution can be to add two or three extra double sockets in more convenient places.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS of D.I.Y:
There are now safety regulations regarding the placement of new power sockets (above skirting boards or kitchen worktops). There are also rules regarding the amount of extra sockets you can load onto one ring main.  Any additional power sockets need to be planned carefully and the wall chasing, trunking, wiring and subsequent decoration afterwards needs to be undertaken by an experienced tradesman.

3) Replacing Light Bulbs, downlights, plugs and fuses:

Even though these seem like simple jobs that anyone should be able to do, there are still scenarios where you should really call a professional in. Often in houses with high ceilings, changing a bulb can be a tricky job, such as stairs/ landing lights. Additionally changing downlights in bathrooms and kitchens can be difficult because of old style GU5/GU10 and incorrectly rated bulbs, or rusted and missing circlips. We’ve even been called out on christmas eve to fit a new plug on a fridge freezer in order to stop a christmas day disaster!
